Resilience as the new punk

Has the world gone mad? Perhaps. But waiting for things to calm down again isn’t exactly the best strategy.

We live in an age that constantly demands more from us. To be faster, more flexible, more productive. To be able to respond to change before we’ve even had time to put a name to it. Pandemics, war, economic uncertainty, pressure to perform, information overload and growing loneliness have become the backdrop to our everyday lives. It is precisely in such a world that resilience takes on a new meaning.

It does not mean gritting your teeth, feeling nothing and enduring everything. That is more like a recipe for eventually being unable to endure anything at all. Resilience is a toolkit for life: the resources we draw on when things do not go to plan. Our health, mental wellbeing, relationships, skills, experiences, trust, resources, values and the environment in which we live. We all have a different mix of these elements; it changes over time and can be built up and developed.

At the Solvo Institute, we’ve decided not only to study resilience but also to measure it. We’ve created the Individual Resilience Index: a tool that doesn’t seek out ‘tough guys’ or ‘wimps’. It shows what keeps you afloat when the going gets tough, and where, conversely, you have room for improvement.

Together with Miroslav Singer, David Shorf and Jana Skopová, we’ll be opening a debate on resilience. Because perhaps, precisely at a time when we’re expected to be constantly strong, high-performing and ‘cool’, the greatest act of defiance is knowing your limits, being able to ask for help, and building up your resources before you need them.

Do you know how resilient you are? Let’s find out.

David Shorf (debate moderator) – Chief Story Architect at the Solvo Institute, writer, deputy editor-in-chief of Lidové noviny, couples therapist and former soldier in the Israel Defence Forces (IDF)
Jana Skopová (speaker) – Chief Resilience Officer at the Solvo Institute, former adviser to the Minister of Defence and external member of the Centre for Security Studies at CEVRO University
Miroslav Singer (speaker) – economist, former Governor of the Czech National Bank and collaborator at the Solvo Institute
